“The oil palm is an image, an object whose possible meaning is not yet fixed. It should not be mistaken for the icon of tropicality and leisure, but it should also not be dismissed as a symbol of indifference and hypertrophy of global consumption. Instead, the oil palm could be seen the marker of a new geography of the underrepresented and the unfamiliar; an image that suggests a possible transformation and still evoking the excitement of the unknown.
